Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo were double goal-scorers and Jose Maria Callejon added a late goal as Real Madrid produced a great performance away at Mallorca to secure a 5-0 victory.
First half goals from Argentine striker Higuain and Portuguese winger Ronaldo knocked the stuffing out of home side, with Madrid almost looking as if they did not have to break sweat to maintain or extend their lead.
Higuain and Ronaldo then added a further goal each after the break, in both cases finishing off excellent team moves, before Callejon notched in the final seconds from close range to complete the rout.
A positive response was required by Jose Mourinho’s men after their 2-1 defeat to German champions Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday and the pressure was on following Barcelona’s 5-0 trouncing of Rayo Vallecano in Madrid on Saturday night which left Real 11 points behind their great rivals.
That gap was reduced to eight points – with nine games played – as Madrid condemned Mallorca to a fourth consecutive league defeat. Indeed the result also gave Real their sixth win in seven of their last matches against their hosts, with a dominant display making them too hot to handle for the Balearic Island side.
Madrid took the lead with a goal from nothing after an even start, as Higuain picked up a loose ball on the edge of the Mallorca box and smashed it into the net in the eighth minute. Mallorca goalkeeper Dudu Aouate had no chance to stop it and he was soon picking the ball out of his net for a second time as Ronaldo double the visitors’ lead in the 22nd minute, beating his marker and slotting in from the right hand side just inside the area.
After the break Madrid inflicted further damage, as Higuain finished coolly to make it 3-0 on the 70 minute mark courtesy of a sweet assist from Ronaldo. Then just three minutes later the game was ended as a contest, when Higuain returned the favour and supplied the effervescent Ronaldo with a clever through ball on the turn – which the speedy Portuguese forward slotted into the net.
That strike was Ronaldo’s 18th goal in 14 games in all competitions so far this season, making him the top scorer in any of Europe's big five domestic leagues at present.
Mallorca’s misery was completed in the closing exchanges as they were denied an apparent penalty when the ball struck young Madrid substitute Alvaro Morata on the hand in the visitors’ area, only for Real to make it five on the counter attack as Callejon netted from close range.
